Next, the INDEX function can return the code from the range $D$1:$D$3, that is at the position that the MATCH function identified.

The result is 2, so the code вЂњCATвЂќ, the 2nd item in range D1:D3, was found in cell A1. Make the following change to the formula in cell B1, and remember to press Ctrl + Shift + Enter. Next, you can add the MATCH function, wrapped around the COUNTIF formula, to get the position of the вЂњ1вЂќ in the results.

Important: After you check the results, press the Esc key, to exit the formula without saving the calculated results.

The array shows 0 1 0 so it found a match for CAT, which is in the second cell in the range, $D$1:$D$3. To see the results of the array formula, click in the formula bar, and press the F9 key. There are wildcard characters before and after the cell references to D1:D3, so the text will be found anywhere within the text string. This formula needs to be array-entered, so press Ctrl + Shift + Enter. We can use the wildcard with COUNTIF, to see if the string is found somewhere in the text. These functions work beautifully together, with MATCH identifying the location of an item, and INDEX pulling the results out from the murky depths of data.

One note of caution: the INDIRECT function is a VOLATILE function, which means it will recalculate every time the worksheet recalculates. So the result of this INDIRECT function is SalesData which is the name of the first data column in our SalesData table. What we've done is concatenate 'SalesData'. So in our formula, the INDIRECT portion is: =INDEX(INDIRECT('SalesData'),MATCH($B$11,SalesData,0))ДЇor those not familiar with the INDIRECT function, it returns the reference specified by a text string. Instead of using the MATCH function to define the column, let's instead pre-define the range for the INDEX function using the INDIRECT function, and utilize the product names in column A to reference the appropriate column from our Table. I can construct the same formula as with a data range, but notice that I don't need to convert the references to the table to absolute, since they are already defined based on the columns of the table. Now, on the next tab, I have the same data, but in a table named SalesData. Notice that I locked all the cell references using the F4 key to make them absolute cell references, except the one reference to the product in column A, so that will change as I copy it down. I'll define the range for my INDEX portion of my formula with just the sales data from my data range, and use the MATCH function to define the row and column intersection.
